Employer: Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, P.C.

Job Title: Associate Attorney

Committee Member On: Civic Engagement

What she likes about work:
I am a first year associate at Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, P.C. where I work primarily on commercial real estate and commercial financing matters, which includes representing lenders and borrowers in loan transactions, sellers and purchasers of commercial (and sometimes residential) real estate. In my role, I have the opportunity to work with many different attorneys and work on a variety of real estate matters. In my short time out of law school, I have had the opportunity to work independently on various transactions, which has allowed me to grow as an attorney.

What she sees herself in 5 years:
In five years, I see myself having bought a house with my husband and starting a family. I also see myself joining a running club and/or vocal ensemble (I sang in college and briefly afterwards and really miss it but haven’t had the time) as a way to enjoy my hobbies and make friends. It’s too easy to get into a routine that does not involve activities outside of work (especially in the legal profession) and, as I become more experienced in my job, I want to make sure I make time to have connections and activities outside of work!

What she loves about the Hartford Region:
I love the rich history of Hartford and the hidden gems it has to offer (plays and musical performances and great restaurants and bars). At this time, with the increase in young professionals to the area and passion of those who live here to rejuvenate the area, Hartford is poised to grow and become more competitive with its New England counterpart. Even small things like the, Bushnell Park Beer Garden Pop-Up this summer is a great new addition to the city and I hope events like that continue to become more prevalent as Hartford continues to grow and more people move to the city.

Her favorite thing about HYPE:
I have enjoyed how welcoming all of the members have been and how easy HYPE makes it to get involved in the community and meet other young professionals. The events do not feel forced and everyone involved seems genuinely interested to be there.

Her hobbies and interests outside of work:
My husband and I have a sailboat that we keep in Maine, so I enjoy going up on the weekends and sailing. I also enjoy running. I try to run a road race, whether it be a half-marathon or even just a 5k every few months to keep me motivated as something to train for. I also enjoy cooking. My husband I also like hitting up breweries.

Book(s)she is currently reading:
I just started All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doeer, and like it thus far. I just finished Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens and really enjoyed it, although I was slightly disappointed with the ending. I am also reading Commonwealth by Ann Patchett, which focuses on several families and their intertwining relationships.
